Albert Uderzo

A beloved French comic book artist and scriptwriter, Albert Uderzo [1927-2020] was best known as the co-creator and illustrator of the Astérix series in collaboration with René Goscinny and he also drew other comics such as Oumpah-pah. Astérix was first published in the magazine Pilote in 1959, but in 1961 the first album Asterix the Gaul was published as an individual album. Asterix is without doubt one of the best-loved characters in European popular culture alongside Herge's Tintin, with more than 370 million albums sold worldwide, 11 films and even a theme park. An original illustration for the cover of one of the early Asterix comic books from 1965 sold for a record $2.2 million at Drouot, a Paris auction in 2017. |
