DescriptionThis is a very special and extremely rare piece of original artwork, indeed. The Golden-Age Mary Marvel by one of her very first artists, Jack Binder who may have had a hand in her creation - Mary's first comic book appearance was in Captain Marvel Adventures #18 (Fawcett Publ./ December, 1942). Binder was the principle artist on many of Mary Marvel's earliest adventures in Wow Comics as well as her very own title, Mary Marvel Comics. Artist Jack Binder, along with his writer brother, Otto Binder and Marc Swayze formed a significant part of the creative nucleus for Fawcett Publications throughout the Golden-Age.Mary Marvel was the third member of the famed Marvel Family and one of the earliest super-heroins in comic book history. Here is a beautifully exquisite full figured illustration of Mary Marvel in her full blown Golden-Age glory, which was used for the letterhead of the Mary Marvel Club in 1945-46 (note that Binder altered the cape just a bit to fit within the allotted space). This detailed and tightly rendered image was also used as a promotional piece in Hoppy the Marvel Bunny #5 (Fawcett, 1946) as well as the front cover piece for the article "Journey To The Rock of Eternity," written by Bob Cosgrove for the fanzine The Comic Crusader #15 in 1973. Of interesting note is that this figure is intriguingly similar to the one on the cover of Mary Marvel #1 (Fawcett Publ./ December, 1945), which was likewise illustrated by Jack Binder. The fact that Mary's figure is subtly highlighted in a few small areas with whiteout and that this image was rendered on extremely old heavy illustration board with an in-house production note that reads, "6 Color Stats" authenticates that it was indeed published during the Golden-Age. Binder signed the piece in blue script at a later date than when the image was illustrated. This remarkable piece was well executed in pencil and ink on heavy board by Jack Binder and signed by the artist at lower right corner, with the image measuring a WHOPPING 10" wide (from cape tip to cap tip) and 13.5" tall. A rare treat by one of the greatest Golden-Age legends of all time, bar none, whose artwork is damn near impossible to find in today's marketplace.
