Description

This was one of the more ridiculous stories in my comic art collecting career.

One day Jim Lee posted to the Comicart-l trying to find an old Italian record album. He said he'd trade art for it.

I started googling around and found a copy that was available for $50. Jim said he was interested, and a couple of emails later I'd bought the album and it was on its way.

He said he'd do a drawing for me as a thank you; who was I interested in?

I gave him a list of: Wolverine, Magneto, Batman, Gambit, & Psylocke

He was busy for a while and told me he'd get to it soon. Then one day I got an email saying he'd finished the piece but needed to get it scanned before he mailed it off.

When I received a package I had no idea what to expect. I was guessing it would be a 5x7 sharpie sketch or something.

Instead it was this piece of Batman, 11x17, full pencils and inks by Jim Lee, including fingerprint-fog all over!! This was pre-Hush too, around 2000, and it's drawn in a more 'classic Jim' style of his X-days.

An amazing thank you gift for a $50 record album!

Love this early interpretation of the Bat! I'm guessing that this is pre-Hush; there is a heavy Miller "Dark Knight Returns" influence in this piece. Just love this piece.

A piece like this is waaaay up on my list. Lee has catapulted to one of my favorite Bat artsists, and it is because of amazing pieces like this one

I really don't want to piss off this guy.... It reminds me of the more muscular style of the 90's, very Whilce Portacio-like.

Wow! what a great story! This really shows what kind of quality person Jim is. He could have just done a quick sketch and it probably would have been really cool, but you can see he really put a lot of effort into this. As for the art, I love when Jim inks his own pencils. It's interesting how he reverts to a more traditional style, similar to his Punisher and early Uncanny X-men style of drawing. Good call asking for a batman, it's not a character i would have thought to ask for at the time.
