I only buy Trimpe Hulk pages inked by Jack Abel or Trimpe himself. Trimpe was cursed with a slew of bad or inappropriate inkers while on the Hulk, but, Jack Abel just looked great over him.

I agree that Jack Abel was great inking Trimpe, but John Severin was my favorite.

I love John Severin's art on Westerns, but he was not cut out for inking superhero books. You can read my detailed analysis on Trimpe and his inkers here: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=20477

A thoughtful article and I praise you for giving Herb Trimpe his due. While I agree with the majority of your points, I respectfully disagree with some things including your take on Severin and grouping him with inkers like Sal Trapini. Since the Hulk was character that stood out as somewhat unique in the world of spandex superheroes, I would argue that John Severin's cross-hatching style was a beautiful compliment to Trimpe's storytelling and helped set the title apart from the norm. You describe Severin's work as a "limited use of blacks and a general flatness to each panel that kills much of Trimpe’s cinematic approach"... I believe many pieces in my gallery (see 142, 145 & 148) provide evidence for a different conclusion. Opinions may vary, but at least we can agree that Herb Trimpe developed into a wonderful storyteller and is vastly under-appreciated for his contribution to Marvel Comics. Your amazing Hulk art collection proves that point!

Those look like some slick inks, and that last panel is classic!
