Description

This incredible prelim was done in Frank's great 1970s period... I believe the original painting was stolen in transit from the publisher, or at least that was what Frank was told...huge 8 x 10"...awesome really...!

Also...to add to the back story. The original Conan painting (in which he has white hair and a handlebar mustache) wasn't stolen in transit to the publisher: Frank always drove into NY and delivered his art to Lancer. The painting was stolen by someone in the Lancer office when they declared bankruptcy and closed down, but not before Lancer had shot transparencies, printed cover proofs, and also given a transparency to their sublicensor, Sphere Books, in England. The Sphere edition of CONAN OF AQUILONIA has Frank's cover art; when Ace acquired the rights to the book, they ran a Boris cover (probably because they didn't have a transparency of Frank's art).
