This is the preliminary concept selected by DAW Books to be used as the basis for the final cover art for Crown of Shadows, book #3 in the Coldfire Trilogy, by C.S. Friedman.

Interestingly enough, I was just out of college and managing a bookstore back when Crown of Shadows came out in hardcover. The image leapt out at me from across the store�it was that striking of a cover.

Although I was already a fan of Michael Whelan, this was the cover that prompted me to reach out to him. After writing him a letter of introduction in 1995, I started developing his original website and worked on it until 2003-2004. Last year (2012), we relaunched Michael's website. In addition to managing all of the content for the site, I also assist with original art sales.

Not surprisingly I've picked up quite a few pieces of original Whelan art through the years. This concept is, of course, one that I hold near and dear.
