Description

Artist Khoi Pham recently held a sale of his original comic art, and I scooped up four pages at great prices. I chose a couple of his Hercules pages because I loved the Incredible Hercules series that ran for a couple of years in 2008-2010, taking over from Incredible Hulk in the aftermath of the World War Hulk event.

This is a page from Incredible Hulk #112 (though it's mislabelled as being from issue #111), the last issue before it was retitled Incredible Herc, but it's really the beginning of the focus on Hercules. I chose this page because it features Herc prominently as well as his brother Ares, who was a member of the Avengers at the time.

Even without the dialogue on the board, Pham makes it clear the divine siblings don't get along. Again, I love the detail Pham instills in Herc's face. I find the artist's choice not to give Ares pupils to be an odd choice. It's not consistent with his portrayal in other Marvel titles at the time, and Herc, a fellow Olympian, has pupils. But it does reinforce the menace Ares presents in this story, so I understand it.
