DescriptionSo, last year at the First International Comic Festival (Kaigai Manga Festa) at Tokyo Big Sight (not "Site;" "Sight"), Phil Tan started my sketchbook with a bang by drawing one of his favorite characters, Kamen Rider Black, one of the most popular of the Rider series, but he forgot to draw the Antennae. But, hey, no problem, he came back to visit Tokyo again this year in time for the show's second annual event and I was helping his buddy, Peter Nguyen, interact with Japanese fans, and I knew he'd stop by our table at some point. When he did, I brought out the sketch he drew for me, and, he began the very quick task of finishing the drawing he'd begun the year before. As he did, a nice gentleman with a well-groomed white beard looked over Phil's shoulder. Phil saw somebody he needed to talk to, told me he'd be back and galloped away to catch somebody's ear. It was then that the gentleman came up to me, handed me his name card, introduced himself as Masato Hayase and told me that he worked for Ishinomori Productions (the company that produces Kamen Rider) as the "manga production team original supervisor" and that he had been the head designer for various Heisei Era (1990s and up) Kamen Rider shows. Realizing who he was, I begged him to wait for a moment and began madly shouting after Phil and gesturing for him to come back. Phil looked a tad puzzled at my seeming impatience, but when he came over, I passed Mr. Hayase's card to him and explained who he was and Phil's eyes lit up and I did my best to translate the conversation. Finally, Mr. Hayase pointed out one more thing that Phil had forgotten to include on my drawing: a sensor on the hero's forehead. "Ohhhhhh," both of us said in unison, and then Phil, with only a ballpoint pen handy, made his final "fix" on the drawing he began last year. Before he walked away, I asked Mr. Hayase to autograph the piece as well, which he did, and thus, was the first drawing in my Tokyo sketchbook completed. Social/Sharing |
