Description

This is the April 5, 1965 Hi and Lois daily. Of all the strips originally conceived as strips about a family, Hi and Lois, created by Mort Walker and drawn by Dik Browne is the best (Blondie was originally a flapper strip, Gasoline Alley was originally about a bachelor.) This is an early example.

The most striking thing about this daily is how Lois looks. Neoteny is the retention of infantile characteristics in adults. Domestic cats are full of neoteny compared to other felines. Steven Jay Gould wrote about how Mickey Mouse developed such characteristics over time, going from a rat-like figure to one with a high rounded head, etc. Statistically, men prefer women with more baby-like faces. Here, Lois's forehead and cranium are very rounded and huge, like a baby's. Her cheeks are poochie. She looks cute as a button, better than today, though not much different at first glance. She's done a partial Mickey Mouse in reverse.
