Pre-con commission sketch for C2E2 2013. CGC SS 9.8.

EVS did a great job on this Rachel Summers commission. The Phoenix sitting on her shoulder, the little fire roses, and all the other details in the billowing fire/Phoenix effect are beautifully done and look even better in hand.

I remember how the Overstreet Price Guide indicates any writing would lessen the grade. Now you can get a 9.8 grade with the entire cover being drawn upon.

I realize you're just making an observation and probably know the following already, but I'll point this out in case anyone reading isn't aware of CGC's practices: This is an example of CGC's signature series (yellow label) which means the signature, and in this case sketch, was witnessed by a CGC representative. Sig series books do not take the witnessed "writing" into account when grading. However, if the signature/sketch had been unwitnessed and the book was submitted for a Universal grade (blue label), the writing would be treated as a defect and the grade would be lowered accordingly. Personally I don't think the grade on the book really matters for sketch covers anyway, as they're all about the original artwork.
