Nick did not recall the title of the movie except that it was a French film.
After winning the (rhymes with "pre-pay") auction, it took a few searches to find a website of French movie posters. The original 1979 French film (starring Jean Rochefort) is titled "Le Cavaleur", which seems to be slang. Using today's slang, the American translation would be "The Playa" ( e.g. womanizer ). However, the US release of the film was titled "Practice Makes Perfect". The published poster was executed by Robert Tanenbaum, who has produced many movie posters. The oddest thing is that Nick's and Tanenbaum's layouts are very similar. I have no idea how things work in Hollywoodland. For the record, I like Nick's better, and I'm not just saying that.
Anyway, Nick still had his original final prelim for this piece. This is a fairly large gouache painting (signed Cardi) that must have taken a lot of work. I showed him a color picture of my piece because it was too big for travel. The funniest thing is Nick did not have any recollection of working on the finished version. I'm pretty sure Nick used gouache.
