Published in THE MALCOLM WILLITS COLLECTION OF MICKEY MOUSE PAINTINGS BY FLOYD GOTTFREDSON produced by Howard Lowery. Lowery summarizes the story: "Mickey and his longtime friend Horace Horsecollar ride out west with only an ancient map to guide them to a buried bag of gold nuggets. Peg Leg Pete and his evil companion Eli Squinch ambush the pair at a desert waterhole and the battle is on." Created with opaque watercolors on illustration board to a size of 21"x16" and framed to 33"x28". Rendered July 1980. Gottfredson's "Race for Riches" Western story went from the 1935 newspaper comic strips, to the 1938 Big Little Book, to comic books, to this painting. Image also used on a postage stamp for the Central African Republic (1998).
