Description

This EXTRA cool Modesty Blaise (received in trade from Brian Peck), by Enric Romero, was censored in (I believe) Detroit in the late '70s. Despite that there have been several strips throughout the almost forty year run featuring some nudity, and despite the fact that there has never been anything REMOTELY sexual in the relationship between Modesty and her friend Willie Garvin, THIS strip AND the preceding strip were censored. The ORIGINAL is what is featured above, but the "additional image" shows the censored version. ENJOY!

Very cool (and humorous) seeing those censored changes. I wonder what they thought they were censoring. A terrific strip, Rob. Congrats!

A modesty screen for Modesty. I supposed that makes sense, but the uncensored art is so much better. Great pickup and a good story to go with it.

I assume that the edit was done in editorial and that Romero had nothing to do with the "redraw..." right?

Ray -- I'm not sure who did exactly what or when. Lawrence Blackmore states in "Modesty Blaise Death Trap": "Even Peter O'Donnell himself does not know when these changes were made, and was not particularly happy when he found out. The amended overlaying artwork is still attached to the original strips in Romero's archive". Needless to say, that last bit is no longer true, since I now have the original as it was first drawn. On close inspection, however, one can still see the faint residue of the screens which were carefully placed over the art ... FORTUNATELY not in such a way as to mar the original, which looks perfectly fine. I will hope to hear more from Romero on this matter.

Nice strip.

I just checked it in the new Titan edition and this strip and the two other strips above are a little blurred. The top strip on the page is fine.

I understand that the act of censorship is not so much due to Modesty's particular state of dressing but the fact that Willie could see her half naked.

That would explain the screen placed between the two to provide some privacy.
