Description

If you find it hard to believe that a dress could be purchased for 10¢ in 1920, it's probably because dresses weren't that cheap, even 95 years ago. Frank King made many references during this time period regarding the costs of various items. Walt had spent $6 for a straw hat in June 1920 and his neighbors, Bill and Amy, each spent $12 for hats just a month before this strip appeared. Using those prices for comparision, it is obvious that a dime might have been enough for a cheap lunch, but it wouldn't have been nearly enough to purchase major items of clothing. The very fact that Walt was 10¢ short when it came to paying for his meal also shows that a dime didn't have that much buying power at the time this strip was written.
