Description

Vintage early 40's Sheet Fed Photogravure authorized by the photographer. Made utilizing a carefully etched copper plate made from the original negative, done by pressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate which has been intricately etched to varying depths to correspond with the actual tonality of the original negative. Due to it's significant expense and labor, the process is rarely seen today.
The photographer Maxwell Fredrick Coplan (American, 1912-1985) whose subjects included Alfred Hitchcock, Audrey Hepburn, Bob Dylan, Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Arthur Miller and many other notable figures during his career. Coplan had a passion for the circus and spent significant time traveling with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Baily Circus as well as The Big Top Circus during which he photographed the sights and scenes in and surrounding their respective traveling shows during which he captured the Mickey Mouse Balloons which since have been professionally dry mounted with Bienfang archival materials onto sturdy 4ply museum mat board.
