DescriptionORIGIN OF THIS ONE:Jules Feiffer does NOT do sketches usually, but I interviewed him a few times. Second or third time, I got the nerve to ask how much a Phantom Tollbooth drawing would cost, as I saw in an article where his agent was selling doodles and this is one of my all-time favorite books. To my surprise and delight, he said he'd do one for free! It took about a year to get it, but believe me I wasn't complaining. The books I read as a kid shaped my imagination and much of who I am. This is like getting a Beatrix Potter, a Garth Williams, an Ernest Shepard, a Maurice Sendak original -- and none of those would be addressed specifically TO ME. It does not get better than this. The adventures of Milo, Tock, and the Humbug in the Lands Beyond is a story that I can return to again and again. When I get depressed, when I have a bad day, when it feels like there's nothing to do -- this book reminds me of the potential in life, and the power of battling depression and anhedonia. It's done that for millions of readers all over the world for more than half a century. Collecting sketches and commissions has been a great little hobby, getting personal drawings from all those wonderful artists who bring color and creativity to my life. To have these characters, by the man who gave them life on the page, makes this the crown jewel of my collection. Thank you, Mr. Feiffer -- for this drawing, and for doing this story in the first place. Social/Sharing |

Zack, I'm amazed and overjoyed to see Jules' work posted here. I read the Phantom Tollbooth in fourth grade, in the 1960s, and Feiffer's wonderful drawings have stayed in my imagination all these years, along with Juster's hilarious play-on-words prose and plot. Thanks very much for sharing! --Phil Sevetson

You got a Feiffer piece????? I read this book throughout elementary school and never thought it'd be possible to own any of the art. At all! Congrats from one fan to another!
