DescriptionI’ve enjoyed collecting Steve Mannion’s artwork since I first met him in 2008. What’s so much fun about his work is the variety of eclectic styles he seems to have in his arsenal. He can go from a traditional comic book style one minute to cartoony the next. Then out of nowhere he’s doing something that looks like it came straight out of a 70’s underground book. And just when you think he’s out of tricks, he comes up with something artsy like this Vampirella piece where it looks like he’s channeling his inner Kent Williams. Some artists draw the same way their whole lives. They learn to do it one way and that’s all they do. No matter what era of their careers you study - the early primitive years, the prime peak years, or the later years when their hands start to betray them - the singular style will always be evident. In other words, they’ll draw the same way until they simply can’t draw anymore. After all, it IS a perishable skill. Of course there’s absolutely nothing wrong with drawing one way for 30-40 years. Many of my favorite artists have had one style their entire careers. It just makes it all the more impressive that while some artists struggle to maintain the quality of a single style, there are artists like Steve who are able to execute multiple styles not only with ease, but with a high level of quality as well. And THAT is what makes collecting his work so much fun. Social/Sharing |

Excellent description. Mannion's versatility is extraordinary! Kent Williams, at a fraction of the price, and a bit of Ashley Wood in the washes. Really, quite exceptional!
