Tyko Sallinen, editorial cartoon, ca. 1913

Tyko Sallinen (1879-1955) was a Finnish expressionist painter. After an exhibition of his caused a scandal in 1912, he took refuge in America for couple of years, drawing cartoons for the socialist Finnish American gag magazine "Lapatossu" published in Hancock, Michigan with the newspaper Tyomies (The Workman).
Lapatossu was a character from popular folk stories and was used as a figurehead for the magazine. This cartoon incarnation of him was first created by K. A. Suvanto who both preceded and succeeded Sallinen.
