DescriptionAs promised, another Guardians homage cover featuring their otherwise-little-seen 60's costumes. John Watson does his usual masterful work, adapting the Challengers cover and suggesting things that weren't in my original plan (the Guardians headshots and including issue number from Marvel Super Heroes --- my logic is that, in my world, the first GotG appearance sold sufficiently well that Stan decided to given them another try-out, rather than MSH #21 being the first all-reprint issue). And yes, "Time Warp: Book One" --- there are others bubbling away in my brain.I don't always have a full-on story to accompany these, but in this case ... on the run from the Badoon following their first adventure (in MSH #18), the Guardians are pulled through time to the 40th Century by Kang, following his conquest of the earth but before his journey back to the 20th Century as seen in Avengers #8. Thinking that an already-conquered earth in the 30th Century might be a better first stop on his quest to control the whole of time, he captures the Guardians and prepares to journey back a thousand years. (For those that worry about such things, although the Guardians are helpless in the suspension beam, Vance Astro is able to mentally free one of Yondu's yaka arrows from the quiver, and the Centaurian Guardian's whistling controls it to destroy the machine and free the team, who escape, steal Kang's repaired time-sphinx (as used by his Rama-Tut incarnation in FF #19), and flee back to the 30th Century. Kang, frustrated, returns to his original plan to conquer the 20th Century first ...) Oh, and ... another outing for "Marvel Cosmic Group", top left. Social/Sharing |

I think the artist did a fantastic job here. Interesting note is that Kang was indeed slated to meet the Guardians in issues #37-39 of their 1990 series (if Valentino has stayed on). I too have a Kang vs GOTG type commission in the works but you beat me to the punch! I wasn't familiar with the original Challengers cover but this is a great homage. Absolutely loving this. If you want to trade large scans of some GOTG commissions let me know.
