Description

Akihabara - the electronics and comic district of Tokyo. Lights and billboards everywhere. One thing that surprised me about Tokyo is the amount of pornography around. It was everywhere. It reminded me of what Times Square was like circa 1988 without all the dead hobos and violence. It is everywhere. In Akihabara I went into an 8 story store that turned out to be mostly a porn shop and every floor you went up, the material got more graphic until you hit the depraved floors.

The comic shops here were 8 stories high too. Lots of electronics and computer stores. There was a real buzz to the area and I revisited the area a second time a few days after my first visit. Wanting to try the entire Japan experience, I went to a Maid Cafe for a beer. It was a fun experience. My maid server had an anime eye patch. There was no English so I missed out on some of the experience. Every 30 minutes or so, the Maids put on a 3 or 4 act dancing/lip sinc act to some J-pop music. Fun. What really surprised me was the rest of the crowd. I was there mid afternoon on a weekday so less busy. There were 3 tables of 4 to 6 people in their late 20's or early 30's. They bought glow sticks and when the Maids were singing they were all cheering and waving their sticks. There was one guy by himself who bought two glow sticks and was doing a dance twirling around and waving the sticks like they were nun-chucks. It was like being in a David Lynch movie. It cost about $6 for the beer and $5 sitting fee. I think it is something I'd do again with a group of friends.
