Description

Fortunino Matania brilliantly illustrates an intangible power through his composition of a staircase swept clear of a crowd. The goddess, bearing a warriors' crested helm, steps resolutely down a staircase, her layered toga aglow. Before her, she projects a definable wave of fear that forces the chaotic crowd back in a tangled disarray. Cringing, stumbling and terrified most even avert their eyes as if it were Medusa herself descending. The goddess's careful, understated movement provides a perfect juxtaposition to the fleeing troops. Matania reinforces the graceful power of her vertical pose by echoing it in the hard solidity of the stone columns that frame her. Undoubtedly designed for a double page spread, each side is well composed yet remains tethered by the shared steps. Published in Britannia and Eve October 1933 as part of his series, Strange Stories in History, "The Goddess that Saved a City". The article was both written and Illustrated by Matania.

The guy with the spear at the end of the steps is dead meat for gawking at a goddess. Great stuff, Tom!!
