DescriptionMind-blowing.I can't think of a better word to describe this new, huge, magnificent illustration by the artist Fabio Celoni. The inspiration to this piece is (IMHO) one of the greatest Disney parodies ever realized, "Paperino e l'Isola del Tesoro" (Donald Duck on Treasure Island), written and illustrated by Bottaro and first published in 1959, Topolino #216-218. We're talking about the parody of R.L. Stevenson's "Treasure Island" acclaimed novel, a reference for all the adventure stories that followed. In the Disney story, a ghost brings Donald and the nephews back in the past, where Uncle Scrooge is a pirate with the Beagle Boys as his crew. Adventure, humor, pirates, and a treasure. You can't ask for more. Bottaro, probably influenced by the location he lived and was raised (Rapallo, Liguria), was particularly interested in pirates' stories; he drew some more for Topolino and quite a lot for his most famous creation, the young pirate Pepito. Speaking of Fabio's illustration, now. What. The. Heck. Scrooge, the pirate Beagle Boys, Donald, and nephews are on the pirate galleon that is being attacked, near Skull (Treasure) Island, by a giant octopus, while the storm is raging. A highly dramatic scene, meticulously composed and detailed. You can almost hear the wind howling, the sea roaring, the galleon crackling, the cannons bursting... you're drawn inside and don't wanna leave without knowing what's next. Also, in the additional images, some panels from the original story are shown. Please check Celoni's original pencils for this piece here. I do own a piece that shows what happens next, please see The Treasure of Skull Island is Mine. Huge thanks to Fabio!!! Paper size: 35 x 50 cm Social/Sharing |
