Description

I had only seen a few of these around over the years. Maybe 3? When I saw this one at Heritage Auctions this time around, I thought it would make a good addition to my strip art collection. Now that it is part of my collection I did some research and found out why I had seen so few. The strip ran for just over 2 years in Sunday format but the dailies only ran for a little over 4 months. I am not sure why they didn't run longer as Betty Boop was in her heyday at the time. Hal Seeger is said to have assisted on this strip and was from Fleischer studios. Counihan himself was an assistant to Chick Young on Blondie before taking on the Betty Boop strip.

First conceived in 1930 by Fleischer Studios, Betty was a background character until around 1931 and did not get fully realized until '32. She was based on a famous singer Helen Kane who later sued the studio for using her likeness and singing style. From what I read it sounds like an interesting case and eventually the studio was able to prove the imagery, style of singing and Kane's tag line "Boop-oop-a-doop" all had origins other than Kane.

Regardless of all the back story, Betty Boop was an is a iconic comic figure. A flapper era girl with allure and sexuality that has transcended generations.

It would be remiss not to mention the obvious racial stereotyping that was typical for this era of popular media. As offensive as it is today, at the time it was the norm. One is hard pressed to find any comic art depicting Asians, Blacks, Aboriginals and other ethnic groups in a non-stereotypical and offensive way. None come to mind.
