DescriptionMy latest All-Star Squadron continuation commission - 1987's Annual #4 - with art by the incredible John Watson. As with all of these, the cover is based on a comic in which Roy Thomas is credited as writer, plotter or scripter, in this case Avengers #61. As always, John's work is phenomenal! In my continuity, this falls after issue #76, the aftermath to the All-Star War. A cabal of Nazi sorcerers try to use the World Ice Theory to freeze the US's war effort, but succeed only in opening a portal to Limbo, which allows Surtur and an ice demon to invade Earth 2. Surtur appears on the Canadian border; the ice demon in Florida. The two begin to converge on Washington. Although no longer in possession of his full mystic powers, Doctor Fate recognises the threat not just to the Allies but the entire world if the two demons should meet, and that the All-Stars need their most powerful member (the Spectre) to defeat them. But the Spectre had vanished in issue #73, summoned by the mysterious voice which gave him his powers. Teams of All-Stars are dispatched to slow the creatures' advances, while Fate coordinates the magical members - Zatara, Sargon, Lando Man Of Magic, Ibis, Johnny Thunder's Thunderbolt, Merlin and Tor - to locate the Spectre and return him. When they do - and with most of the team falling to defeat in the meantime - they discover the Spectre battling to prevent an extra-dimensional Chaos-being from beyond their universe from breaching the barrier to Earth 2's plane. Only the willing blood sacrifice of a hero can stop it from doing so! Lando, Man Of Magic reveals he's dying of cancer, sacrifices his own life to halt the incursion, which allows the Spectre to return to Earth, where he defeats Surtur (returning him to Limbo) and the ice demon (destroying it) just as they are about to meet in Washington, with the last of the team (Belle, Green Arrow, Wildcat and the Shining Knight) desperately trying to keep them apart. Earth 2 is saved --- but at the cost of the life of another member of the team..... Social/Sharing |

This is perfect, it reminds me of The Last Days Of The JSA with that endless Ragnarok story-line but giving our heroes both dignity and a victory. AWESOME
