Description

An amazing (I think!) commission cover for All-Star Squadron #73, art by Michael T Gilbert (who drew the Spectre's origin in Secret Origins #15 - which is in part why I asked him to do this cover for me), based on the Roy Thomas-written Invaders #3 (1993 mini-series).

In story terms - as we saw in issue #71, the Spectre joined Hourman, Dr Mid-Nite and the Atom in combating Johnny Quick. Once Johnny fled to the Perisphere to warn Liberty Belle that the JSA members seem to have gone mad (and where he and Belle fought REDACTED in issue #72) the Spectre turns on his allies, but is interrupted by the arrival of another group of heroes - GL, Wonder Woman, Wildcat, Firebrand and Minute-Man.

Although the lesser-powered heroes fall relatively swiftly, GL and Wonder Woman are able to hold the Spectre to a draw for a time --- and as he starts to gain the upper hand, he is summoned by the mysterious Voice which gave him his powers, to protect the Earth from a menace from beyond our plane (the outcome of which can be seen in All-Star Squadron Annual #4). GL and Wonder Woman depart, and when Firebrand recovers, she too sets off to find other members of the team (with an outcome we'll see in issue #74)!

Incidentally, since all the covers in this series are based on the covers of comics which Roy Thomas wrote, plotted or scripted, this really qualifies as a twofer, since the cover of Invaders #3 was itself a homage to the cover of Avengers #57, also written by Roy.
