Description

Here is Tony Millionaire's cover to Star Wars Tales #20, the special issue written and drawn by independent and alternative creators. Tony Millionaire is a multi-Eisner winner for Sock Monkey, Maakies, and Billy Hazelnuts. His style borders on the grotesque, often reflecting the artist's view of a world askew (though the art can be as inspiring as it is jaded). I'm tempted to call his pen and ink work frenetic or hyper-detailed, but it closely resembles etchings. Tony Millionaire doesn't draw many covers outside of his own properties, so this is a rarity. On this cover, just off the heels of Espisode III: The Clone Wars, we see Yoda in Dagobah, withdrawing his light saber out of retirement, warding off a natural predator lurking around his adopted home. 11" x 14" Ink over pencil on illustration board. Condition notes: Moderate wear includes “pin hole” pocks in the upper right margin, compressions on the backside plus debris, minor paper crease on the lower right side. Art is done on thick board which minimizes all these flaws. It’s like .22 calibers bouncing off Superman’s chest.

This was my favorite of all of the Dark Horse Star Wars series.  They managed to get a great mixture of creators on the various stories, and I specifically remember admiring this cover when I first bought this issue (was it really 18 years ago?!?).  A wonderful piece of art!

Fabulous cover to Star Wars Tales #20! First of all, I love that Tony Millionaire did a Star Wars cover at all. Secondly, I love that he drew Yoda battling a fearsome beastie with a light saber in Dagobah. Tony's style is not for everyone, but I like it. It's kind of primitive and not at all realistic or polished but that's okay. Tony Millionaire is doing Star Wars Tony Millionaire-style and that's good. It's liek when you see various artists drawing their version of fairy tale. It's interesting to see something you know from a whole new point of view. I think you picked up a really unique and special Star Wars cover and I love it!
