DescriptionAt the ライブドローイングイベント Japan Comic Art Expo in Kawasaki, wherein I had the job of helping out Jim Cheung deal with his many Japanese fans, I found a bit of time to walk the floor and meet some of the other artists in attendance. Among the foreign guests were two artists from Indonesia.I've met quite a few Indonesian artists who work in the Western comic book industry over the years (my friend, Chrisenda, who is studying in Tokyo usually helps them out). This year I got to meet Yusuf Idris and Ario Murti. Ario, an illustrator who has created art in various fields, has drawn several comic book series including several issues of "Grimm Fairy Tales." Looking at his work, I noticed he had a knack for drawing "sexy ladies" and I thought, "You know, I bet this guy could draw a mean Cutie Honey. If you don't know, Cutie Honey is one of if not the first Japanese shonen (boys) manga series that featured a female character. It was written and illustrated by the great Go Nagai (Devilman, Mazinger, et al) and followed the adventures of a girl, Honey Kisaragi, who discovers she's an android that can transform into the busty, red-haired heroine, Cutie Honey, to fight against the villains that populate her world. Also, because Go Nagai, loved to tweak the noses of '70's era Japanese parents and delight hormone-crazed junior high school boys, one of the trademarks of the character is that she temporarily loses all of her clothing when she changes from one form to to another (she eventually discovers she can change into seven separate characters). With that and Nagai's innate sense of story, he had yet another huge hit on his hands. A popular animated TV show, animated movies and OVA's as well as a live-action film followed. (Meanwhile, back at the Art Expo...) After Ario finished, Chrisenda showed me the sketch and it looked fine, but... I thought something was missing. Then I realized, the hair wasn't red and I asked Chrisenda if it would be possible for Ario to add just a little bit of the the all-important color to the art. No problem. Shortly thereafter, this was the final result. Along with the hair, I was quite pleased with how Ario was able to meld his style to the character. Social/Sharing |
