Description

The first series I actively followed as a youth was the "One Year Later" arc of Robin (back when he had a title to his name). Freddie E Williams III. was the artist on that book, and I loved the expressive quality in his work and the modifications he made to the Tim Drake character: the long hair, the sweeping cape, the ink-blot spotted blacks that permeated his alleyways. Anyway, I approached him with the prospect of a sketch; he said he would gladly do one for free, but at the DC booth later in the day. At one point, however, there was a lull in his schedule; flagging me down, he asked which character I wanted. Upon hearing Robin, he smiled widely and said "Oh, I think I know how to draw HIM!"

This sketch encapsulates everything I love about his run on the character. Unfortunately, there was a cosplaying woman who was handing out ducks dressed as superheroes as a promotion for a website; when my grandfather INSISTED I take one, it ended up in the same bag as this piece and, as it turns out, it was filled with water and damaged the upper righthand corner of the piece. Though it's a cute story and it was easy to crop it out, I would rather have the image fully intact. Still, a lovely interaction.
