I have long been wanting a sweet example of E.C. Segar's Popeye, but with the prices of decent Thimble Theater dailies getting out of sight, I began to think that a nice example was out of reach. Until now. This specialty drawing by Segar is pretty much perfect in every way. Judging by the coding on the back of the drawing, the piece appears to be from a great period, circa 1933-35, and features our one-eyed wonder punching out some guy with a bone-crunching "splat". This comes from the Francis Greeley collection, which first went to auction in 2016. The pieces were all larger than typical specialty drawings, and the degree of finish was top-notch. Francis Greeley was an Army vet, and must of written great letters, as the responses from cartoonists was much better than the usual response. Simply a sweet example.
