DescriptionJim Aparo’s run on Adventure Comics featuring the grisly stories of The Spectre began in February of 1974 and concluded in August of 1975. It was short run done on a bi-monthly basis in between the bi-monthly schedule of his steady-paying job on Brave & the Bold. While the run was limited, he packed a ton of horror and general spookiness into every issue. Adventure 431 (‘The Wrath of the Spectre’) kicks it off and highlights some of the extreme concepts and imagery that shocked young readers like me at the time. In this issue he hunts down three thugs and separately causes one to drive off a cliff, melts one and reduces the last one to crumbling bones in the darkness of a plane. Whoa – we’re not in Kansas anymore! As you’ll see, there is a ton of Spectre imagery throughout with a title splash that is cover worthy. In examining the art, it’s apparent that Aparo really put his best efforts into the story – there is a tremendous amount of delicate detail that adds to the overall atmosphere of the tale. I consider this story a piece of comic history and am thrilled to be its current steward. Big thanks to it's former steward, Steve Morger, for entrusting me with it.Social/Sharing |
