DescriptionAnother small treasure to add to my slowly growing collection of original Manga art. I just returned from my third trip to Tokyo and this is what I have to show for it other than some pretty cool experiences and memories. I can't wait to go back. I don't know much about it as I can't read Japanese but my friend Tim tells me it is by Hiroshi Kaizuka and dates from 1968 from Shonen King from a series called Zero Senkoushinkyoku(Zero Fighter War March). It looks to be very much in the Tezuka style that was common of many manga of this era. Fun stuff no matter what it is.Social/Sharing |

The plane looks like a Mitsubishi Zero fighter from World War II.

Glad I could help you identify it. I think it is a really interesting piece of OA in terms of content and style. I did a bit more reading online and found that the use of Zeroes in manga that depicted the WWII era was a common motif in the late 1950's and throughout the 1960's. From what I read, these manga generally depicted the bravery and skill of the Japanese pilots and celebrated the technical abilities of the planes themselves. The heroes generally dueled American pilots in extended dogfight sequences.

Wow, I don't generally care much for Manga but I love the clean, crisp style on this one! Very Astro Boy....

I love this scene. Hiroshi Kaizuka is one of the great but still very underappreciated ! His most famous (in Japan) is a baseball series he drew shortly after this was published
