Description

Albert Edelfelt (1854-1905) is one of the all-time greatest Finnish painters. His works are concidered national treasures and everybody in the country knows his name. When the National Gallery in Helsinki did a big exhibition of his work in 2004 more than 300,000 people went to see it. For a country of five million, that's not bad!
Imagine then my surprise when I stumbled on this little pen and ink original of his at an auction. Edelfelt's paintings sell for tens, if not hundreds of thousands - and yet noone seemed to be interested in this pen and ink illustration. So I jumped on the opportunity and now am a proud owner of an Edelfelt original!
Edelfelt only illustrated a couple of books in his career. This one, published in 1895, is an epic poem called "Kung Fjalar" by Finland's national poet J.L.Runeberg. (Edelfelt was often inspired in his art by works of Runeberg).
The poem is a Viking epic and is divided into five songs. Edelfelt has drawn a chapter heading for each of them, and included another five or six drawings elsewhere in the text.
This drawing is the chapter heading for the "First Song".
When I took the drawing out of its frame, I discovered that it also had an abandoned draft for the heading of the "Fifth Song" on the reverse.
