DescriptionMickey Mouse is 90 years old.Created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, this is one of the most iconic characters ever created, recognizable by everyone in the whole world, even by his silhouette only, a character that changed the story of Disney, which later, in the Disneyland anthology TV series, said: "I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing – that it was all started by a mouse." First appeared in the silent short cartoon “Plane Crazy” on May 15, 1928, to a test screening in a theater, then publicly debuted the same year on November 18 (now considered the official birthdate while it has been September 28, when the trademark granting Disney the name Mickey Mouse was issued, for a certain period) with the premiere of “Steamboat Willie”, one of the first animated shorts with sound. He appeared in many animated shorts and movies, voiced by Walt himself, such as “The Band Concert”, “Clockwork Cleaners”, “The Brave Little Taylor” and “Fantasia”, and also a star of comic strips and comic books where many artists defined his world and gave him life throughout all these years, Floyd Gottfredson being here surely the most important one. So, let’s celebrate the great little mouse. *** After commissioning a few pieces starring the Golden Age Mickey Mouse, I felt I needed to pay homage to the modern Mickey, and therefore chose a couple of peculiar stories/subjects. Here's the first one. This is an illustration inspired by what is arguably the most controversial Mickey Mouse story ever written, illustrated, and published, Topolino in: "Ho sposato una strega". A parody of the 1942 movie "I Married a Witch" directed by René Clair, written by Massimo Marconi, and illustrated by Giorgio Cavazzano for Topolino magazine, where it was published in 1990 in issue #1785. Published and never reprinted, neither in Italy nor in other countries. Why has the story been banned? Well... Mickey has a fight with Minnie due to another collaboration (that should have been one month long) with Chief O'Hara, she goes on a cruise, alone, saying she doesn't want to see him ever again, and Mickey then decides to go on a trip together with Pluto. He meets this girl, Samantha, and falls in love with her, to the point he's determined to marry her, even after discovering she's a witch. That will not work; a glimpse of their possible future together as a couple doesn't look too pleasant. Anyway, in the end, they go back to their own lives, but... in this story, Mickey leaves Minnie, falls in love with Samantha, kisses her, and is ready to marry her. Probably too much for Disney, even if you can see it simply as a "what if". This was published in a St. Valentine's issue. It is a love story that I felt was strong, romantic, and full of magic. Now, I decided to put this subject in the hands of Emmanuele Baccinelli, a young and talented artist working for Topolino magazine (his first story published in 2015), who, before everything else, is also a friend. The idea was to convey all the emotional load of the story into one illustration, he chose to draw a composition with Mickey looking at Samantha's picture, which seems to bring back memories, fragments, all around him. He did it beautifully. I particularly love the feeling of melancholy you get from Mickey's expression. Huge thanks to Emmanuele!!! Paper size: 30 x 42 cm Social/Sharing |

Emmanuele outdid himself with this one! Congrats on this great commission, and I wouldn't be surprised if you also had grabbed some Mickey cover from him... :)
