Description

No digital pic can do justice to the wonderful fine line work of Gluyas Williams. This piece appeared, I believe, in a version of Cleveland Armory's "The Proper Bostonians", either in book form, or serialized in the September 1947 issue of Harper's. I'm still researching. The caption, written in Williams' aged scrawl, is "At the Athenaeum they have the feeling they are unwanted visitors in a shrine." I've found text online, from the book, that is similar: "The result is that the Athenaeum is sparsely settled � so much so that guest ticket holders who use the place usually have the feeling they are not in a library at all but rather unwanted visitors in a shrine whose primary purpose is to preside over the last rites of Brahminism."

The cartoon is reminiscent of some of Williams' work for the New Yorker, with the wonderful use of architecture to create depth in the image.
