DescriptionI'm thrilled to add a wonderful Gluyas Williams double-page spread to the collection. Titled "Soap and Water" I & II, the piece is a nod to Williams' love of Caran d'Ache's work, and by further extension, H.M. Bateman. This piece was reprinted in Williams' 1940 book, "Fellow Citizens". I don't know where it was published yet, but likely either Life or Collier's magazines. It's doubtful that it appeared in the New Yorker, but I guess it's possible. I'd put the date at circa 1935.There is no scan that can do justice to Gluyas Williams' fine, fine line work, but at least you can get a sense of his subtle figure movement. Just lovely, lovely stuff. Along with the single scan of the two pieces together, I have larger size images of the individual boards. Social/Sharing |

Very fun piece as part of the evolution of cartooning in the comics artform. There are no rules as long as you can communicate the ideas through the artwork.
