DescriptionMajor grail for me.I met Jack Kirby at a convention in late '89 or early '90 (can't remember exactly). Because we were on a cross country trip to California, i didn't have many comics with me, and instead brought a copy of the leather bound anthology "The Best of Marvel Comics" which had two great Kirby Thor stories in it, issues 159, and 171. Hoping for an autograph, I was at the time probably a little disappointed when Jack turned it down in favor of having Roz snap a photo of us and take down my address so they could mail it to me later. My young, skeptical mind was probably just glad to have gotten to meet Jack, but man, oh man, did he deliver. A few weeks later, back in Brooklyn, a small manila envelope arrived, hand addressed to me, with a return address sticker from the Kirby residence in Thousand Oaks, CA. Inside the envelope was a small lithograph print of Captain Victory with a note from Jack on the back and the signed photo that we had taken. I was 11 at the time, and this made an indelible mark on me. Only a few years later I'd moved on from super hero comics, and for a time comics in general, but this encounter with Jack is the thing that always keeps me coming back. As much as there is to say about Jack's unique art style, his prolific work ethic and his creations in general, I really think it's the stories of him as a person that elevate him to mythical status in the minds of his fans. He was devoted to his work and to his family. He was an underdog, and an Artist's Artist. Thor 171 Bill Everett over Jack Kirby 1969 Social/Sharing |

Wow! What an incredible story, Jack was just as heroic as his characters.

One of the best Kirby Thor/Everett pages IMO. But even a better story to go with it. Glad this page found a nice home. Congrats!

I was VERY tempted to buy this page when it came up for sale, kind of regretting not jumping on it after seeing it again. Congrats on a major score!
