DescriptionOkay....whew! This was a tough one. Well...not really, but sort-of.Way back when I had my first inking done by Joe Rubenstein, I had asked him if there were any inkers that HE thought I should reach out to for a commission. One of the names on his list was Brett Breeding. I don't remember WHY I didn't reach out to Brett at that time, but fast forward to 2016. Brett was a guest at a local comic convention so I had an opportunity to meet him. It was thrill to talk about his work with the Death of Superman books among other things. So I finally got around to asking him about this project. He was a little hesitant, maybe due to his work load. But Mark McKenna was at the next table so I asked him to confirm for Brett that I was patient and easy to work with, which he graciously did. So Brett then asked me to follow up with him after the convention and he'd consider it. You can obviously see that we worked it out. Due to a steady stream of work, it took Brett a couple years to get to it and finish it. And I can promise you that it was worth the wait for me to get his version. The dude KNOCKED IT OUTTA THE PARK! As always, I asked Brett for his thoughts on the project and here's his reply (with a small bit of personal stuff removed. "In truth, I struggled with this art, learning along the way that I am not a natural fit for Bernie’s art. This is in fact the third attempt, as I started it twice before and started over again both times because I was unhappy with the results. One of my issues was that this was really a loose layout and not complete pencils, which made it difficult to decide just where to go with it. At first I avoided looking at the other inkers versions, as well as Bernie’s finished cover art, but in the end I did look at them occasionally just to get a sense of how far I could go interpreting some of the looser areas, and how far I could go in changing some of what I thought was weak or incorrect. It was for the most part a struggle, but once I found an approach that worked for me I was able to get through the entire page. I frankly wasn’t sure you would like the end result. I’m happy to hear that you do." The part I enjoyed was finishing it! It was all a challenge, but it does feel good to have it done, to have had the opportunity to work on something of Bernie’s and to ultimately not hate what I did. I did not like the conflicts I had with deciding where to make changes and what to keep. As an inker I try very hard to keep as much of the pencilers work in the final product as possible, but with this being a loose layout I was forced to interpret more than I would like." One more great artist, and even greater person, that I have been fortunate to add to my list. More to come in 2019 (I hope). Social/Sharing |
