DescriptionSpider-Man is featured in this wonderfully executed painted splash from Bernie Wrightson's Marvel Graphic Novel "Spider-Man: Hooky" (also known as Marvel Graphic Novel #22). It is the best image that we have offered from the book, a full page splash with multiple images of an in-action Spidey executing a powerful back flip to escape a demonic monster that'd be right at home in one of the master of the macabre's traditional horror stories. Transporting Spidey into the world of Bernie Wrightson horror was a brilliant combination. We love it! The legendary artist created this page using ink and watercolor on board.Wrightson was not very active in comic books in the middle 1980s when this graphic novel was produced so the release of this story was an event. The quality of the art was exceptional for an American superhero comic and the setting, a fantasy-based alternative dimension, was a new one for Spider-Man. The story is fondly remembered and it is certainly some of the most visually sumptuous Spider-Man art of the the period. Bernie Wrightson's work on mainstream superhero comics outside of Batman has been relatively limited in his long career, making published depictions of major heroes few and far between on the market. The graphic novel featuring the art offered here is Wrightson's only published Spider-Man work, making "Hooky" art pretty unique. Since the beginning of his professional career in the 1970s, Wrightson has been considered a true master of the macabre and the fantasy setting of this story allowed him to incorporate some of his interests into a Spider-Man story. The art has an image area of approximately 13.25" x 18". --- About Bernie: Since the dawn of his career in the early 1970s, Bernie Wrightson was considered one of the true masters of comic art. From his groundbreaking work on Swamp Thing, into the "Studio" era with colleagues Barry Windsor Smith, Michael Kaluta, and Jeff Jones, and onto mainstream visibility in the late 1970s and beyond with projects like Frankenstein, Cycle of the Werewolf and Creepshow, Wrightson's accomplishments and influence were as far-reaching as any artist emerging from the realm of comic art. His work in comics and illustration art is in a class by itself among collectors of the macabre and his work outside of the horror genre is strongly appreciated as well. Wrightson passed away in 2017, leaving behind an incredible body of work. Social/Sharing |

A real masterpiece here, Ed! Love the multiple Spideys to convey movement and the colors are simply top notch! An outstanding piece by an outstanding creator! Congrats! And welcome back to CAF, BTW - it’s been a bit!

Congrats Edward! As the consignor of this piece I was wondering if it would show back up on CAF. Absolutely adore the art from this book, and this is a stellar example which was pretty painful to part with; but heading back to school required the sacrafice. Enjoy this beauty!

Had the great pleasure of seeing this page in person when my buddy Jonathan owned it briefly. If he didn't already own the cover to this book, he probably wouldn't have let this go. Beautiful page and one of the best from that story.
