DescriptionThe Super-Skrull is a personal favorite villain, most likely because of the relative frequency (and deliciously unorthodox manner/situations) with which John Byrne would insert the character into his stories when I was younger. One of the things I love about this page (besides panel 3, which just kills me) are the "cartoony" touches Mr. Byrne uses in a "serious" comic book story, most notably the stars that pop up when Namor belts poor Kl'rt here. More befitting a Katzenjammer Kids or E.C. Segar 'Popeye' setting than that of the Savage Land (one might mistakenly think... :) ). Cool to get a glimpse into the process of things, too, with the fun notes to Glynis Wein (the colorist) along the edges of the panels. John Byrne draws from a comic art toolbox that is deep and mighty, with bits and pieces expertly pulled from the complete history of both comics and comic strips. It's always a treat to see him flex those muscles! Social/Sharing |

I loved the John Byrne run on "Namor". John was at the peak of his art and I liked very much his use of the duo tone thecnique in that period. Great catch Jason.

Cool action page. Byrne owns Namor like no other artists.

despite how much it always pained me to see SS getting his butt whopped, this page is just such an amazing display of Byrne's ability to draw action and especially action when it comes to Kl'rt, i will go to my grave insisting nobody on the planet can draw him as well as John can.
