DescriptionThis is the product of a two-week process, starting exactly after the March 6th announcement by actor Stephen Amell that the eighth season of the hit CW show Arrow will be the final chapter in this long-running saga. I decided to pay tribute to this groundbreaking series by accomplishing what I'd tried numerous times before but never brought to fruition. Further, I wanted to do so in such a way that captured the essence of Oliver Queen's first identity, "The Hood," the prototype persona preceding The Arrow and The Green Arrow. This persona was crafted by Oliver and Talia Al Ghul to channel the darkness accumulated after five years of hell. The Hood was a tool to accomplish the task of taking out the corrupt outlined in a list left by Oliver's father one way...or another. I wanted to capture a high-octane moment of action, so what better way than a first-person perspective through the lens of a sniper rifle. The use of night vision also presented the challenge of rendering nearly EVERYTHING by layering similar shades of yellow-green on a single base tone of YG03. This is the first time I've ever attempted such an approach. I went the extra mile on this 11 x 17" by rendering everything in the circle in black and referenced an actual sniper scope to know how to label the targeting system. Beyond that, I had the biggest challenge of rendering the season one bow; I thank the prop desiners for giving me this headache (insert sarcasm sign). With mixed media, I've accomplished the impossible and I could not be more prouder of this piece. It made me think on my feet to distinguish what shades of yellow-green best translated onto organic and inorganic elements in this page. I also used a dry brush pen to create a bit of a blur effect on the tree at the right side of the circle; by doing so, I created the illusion of depth and made the viewer focus solely on Oliver, dead center aiming right back at the sniper. Overall, this Mixed Media piece on Canison paper would be an ideal addition to any collection of any Green Arrow fan. Biggest nod I ever received came from GREEN ARROW: THE LONGBOW HUNTERS artist Mike Grell from Fan Expo 2019. He was deeply impressed by this piece's detail and I couldn't have been more honored than knowing I impressed the master.Social/Sharing |
