DescriptionWhile Buscema's earlier run on CONAN produced the most classic Buscema Conan stories, in terms of artwork my favorite Buscema Conan images were those that Big John inked himself. So I love his early 1980s run of covers--and among them, this has always been one of my favorites. Love Buscema's use of black here, both in terms of the shadow cast over Conan and the girl, and the shadowed treatment of Conan's face. Also love how Buscema drew the monster's claw coming from out of frame, crossing over the corner box; fun knowing that he would add those little touches just to amuse himself. Finally--hell yeah that's one giant sword!Social/Sharing |

Awesome looking piece! And totally agree with use of shading, particularly on Conan’s face - effective! Congrats!

You need a sword like this to challenge such a monster.
Big John was pretty involved in this cover and gave us great Shadows and Light effect.

Ah, and this beautiful drawing on the back always looked to me like some kind of self portrait by John.

Betcha the monster had a longer 'sword.' Who said Sword and sorcery was full of phallic imagery and has it ever looked as good?

I do not know why the girl looks frightened.... surely she knows in the next few minutes she would be having a great time with our surly cimmerian!
