DescriptionThis is the published cover of Topolino #3307, a clear and plain homage to Carl Barks' famous painting titled "Always Another Rainbow" that (presumably) shows Scrooge in the days of Klondike's gold rush.Looking at the rough, you can see that the artist's first idea was to try applying some changes, but in the end, he decided to be faithful to Barks' painting. If you ask me, that was the (only) right choice... the expression, the mood, everything in Barks' piece is pure perfection... and you cannot improve perfection, can you? I find Andrea Freccero's final take every single bit as striking and powerful as Barks' original piece, rich in subtle details and also perfectly balanced... really, it was love at first sight. You'll probably notice when looking at the published piece, that something has been "lost"... well, it's 2019, the world seems to have a different sensibility than only a few decades ago, and certain things in a Disney magazine are not allowed anymore... nevertheless, this does not affect the utter and sheer beauty of the piece. The piece was also later used as a cover in other countries (France, Greece, Sweden, Poland), but it's in a new book in Italy (Disney Special Books 20, "Il Klondike di Zio Paperone") that the image was further edited to also change the bullet belt in an ordinary belt. It sure was weird to leave the bullets there in the first edit, after removing the rifle. Also included in the additional images are the rough, prelim, and the published cover. For bigger scans of the rough and prelim, see: - Topolino 3307 rough - Topolino 3307 prelim Huge thanks to Andrea and Giacomo! Paper size: 25 x 35 cm Social/Sharing |

Now this is a classic! I love the roughs and seeing what he kept and where he pushed for change from the Barks piece. So good! Congrats, Fabio!

totally agree with you... you can see in the rough he initially tried to comply with today's standards (the character is positive, upright posture, smiling, no shotgun, etc.) but that canceled all the elements that hint to the hard life of the gold digger... really the worn-out appearance and expression do tell us a completely different story

Great tribute to Barks iconic painting! The decision to "erase" the rifle for publication really makes me smile: can you imagine any man - or duck :) - who wandered in the Klondike at the end of the nineteenth century, carrying a sack full of gold nuggets... and doing that unarmed? :)))

maybe they thought the pickaxe would have been a good enough weapon... did you also notice they erased the shotgun from the backpack but left the ammunition belt? ^_^
