How do you render a God? How do you capture both the omnipotent and menacing presence? For me the answer was a lot of black ink. Commissioned to draw the Devourer of Worlds, I knew the one cover I had to use was Fantastic Four. A worm's eye view was also the best approach to convey his immense size, and throwing in his spherical ship would give off that sense of an eclipse when he's around. The decision to make him disappear into the darkness was a way of conveying his villainous nature; the man snacks on planets to survive without any thought or care to its inhabitants. But with all that black there had to be something to fill that space. The Silver Surfer was an early decision to throw in as a cameo, but with the help of a French curve and a white gel pen, I managed to establish it's an arrival. To convey distance I did a small rendering of Norrin Radd in Galactus's palm in cool grey prismacolor. The space shot behind the Devourer is what I'm especially proud of. To compliment his costume I used blue-violet tones and a few stars. I also created a burst at the upper left corner of the sphere as a small light source. That was fun (sarcasm sign implemented). All in all this was a successful project and I would love to try my hand at Galactus again down the line.
