Star Science Fiction Stories

An important early SF piece by Powers used as the rear cover of Star Science Fiction Stories (Ballantine, 1953). This is the first SF piece Powers did for this first SF book published by Ballantine, beginning the famous association between Powers and Ballantine that would change the look of SF illustration art.

These early SF images by Powers were more representational (inspired more by Bonestell than Tanguy) but still carries Powers' unique style. Within the year, Powers would begin pushing the "abstraction" envelope.
