I haven't bought any new Ditko art in about a decade, but I couldn't resist this bargain splash page when it came up for auction. This was drawn for a 1984 Golden Super-Adventure Book called War of the Gobots, based on the cartoon series.

This was written by Ditko's friend and later long-time publisher, Robin Snyder. At this point in his career, Ditko was illustrating a very wide assortment of projects, presumably to pay the bills while Marvel and DC made millions off of his creations.

Back in the 80's and 90's, it was my mission to collect as many Ditko comics as possible, and I'd get very excited when I'd come across an unusual publication such as this one. The Internet has made this much easier, but also taken away a lot of the thrill of the hunt.

Even on a project such as this, Ditko couldn't drawn completely generically, and his style seeps through. My scan is cropped, but the image is about 8" x 8.5" on a 10" x 18.5" art board. I've included smaller scans of the full board and the published page 1 splash.

Neat OA. As a kid I was a fan of robots, GoBots and Transformers.

Too bad Ditko never drew Transformers -- at least I think he never did..
