With both of us being local, when Jonathan informed me that he had finally completed my eagerly awaited commission piece (stay tuned for that one), we made plans for him to come by the house and drop it off. Before he came out, I emailed and asked him to bring any other artwork he had for sale. Lucky for me, he brought a nice, big, stack of pieces for me to look through. Even luckier, the stack included this amazing piece. I was already feeling spoiled with having my commission delivered right to my doorstep. But getting all this great bonus art made his visit even more special (and of course made my bank account even smaller, LOL).

As with just about everything Jonathan does, you could study this fascinating, intricate, and complex piece for hours (if not days). I’m telling you, your eyes just don’t know where to go or what to look at first. I’ve got some monster size pieces by Jon, but for once I was almost glad this wasn’t one of them. If this piece was any bigger, I’d probably still be too busy trying to take it all in, instead of writing this description. Studying Jon‘s artwork is like reading one of those really dense classic novels. You don‘t care how long it takes to get through it, you just want to make sure you don‘t miss a single word.

According to Jon, this was something that he did just for fun. It will most likely end up in one of his art books, but for now, it has not been published or used for anything. At 13 x 19, it’s just slightly larger than a standard page, executed in ink & gouache on illustration board. He sent me a pretty big scan, which I’ve reduced here. I was a bit conflicted on which way it would be better to view. If I uploaded something too big, it might be too much work for the viewer (having to scan your eyes up and down, right and left, again and again attempting to catch every single line). But if the image was too small, then it might compromise all those gorgeous details. Hopefully I chose a size with the best balance to showcase Jonathan’s phenomenal skill and imagination.

My thanks to the man himself, for not only all the beautiful new artwork, but for safely delivering it all to my home personally. As for that mysterious commission I mentioned, that will be coming up as soon as I finish posting these “appetizers”. LOL

Stay tuned!

Thanks Troy!  And packed is right.  I can't think of any other artist working today who "packs" as much into their work as Jon does.  Like I said, you don't even know where to start looking.
