Description

Bought this a few years before Tony's death from Tina. I was drawn to the strength of Arak's pose and his chanting, summoning the animal spirits.

I never read Arak before this but in quarantine, I find myself going back to 1985. When I was 15. The origin of story Arak wouldn't have resonated with me then - then I was knee deep in Teen Titans but his story - a Native American raised by Vikings who have come to America which they called "Vinland" made me think of the time in 2016 when I first set foot on Viking land in Iceland and in awe of a statue in the middle of Reykjavik of Eric the Red - the Viking who had discovered Vinland - the future America. 2016 - I was drawn to Norse Mythology so much that I got my first handpoked tattoo of a Vegvisir - a nordic compass, becaome engaged to the love of my life under the Aurora Borealis, and became married in the Harpa Music Hall in Reykjavik.

So even after nearly decade of owning this piece of art - I can still see something new in it. I don't think I ever noticed the quote before and what a fitting quote for our times now.

Pinoy artist are known for their inking - I think mainly because there was no color back then in Pinoy Komiks. So they came to America, many times as inkers and they were damn good inkers but they were artists in their own right. Tony opened that door for many to come. I love this piece because he is both inker and peniciller and what Tony does for his female subjects, same goes for the male.

Thanks to Tina for allowing me to own this beauty and it's about time it made it to this gallery!
