Description
I wanted this piece from the day the comic book hit the newstands in 1969. It took about 25 years for it to turn up, when the artist consigned it to be auctioned at Sotheby's New York in 1993. It cost me more than 3 times the high estimate, but I was prepared to pay even more. I am the only person other than Anderson himself to have ever owned this piece of comic art, and I have now owned it longer than the artist did,

I never realized it until I added the color photograph of the image [which has colors close to those which appeared in the comic book itself], but this image wasn't literally used as a centerfold. Any copy of the comic book would have fallen apart if the comic were disassembled so as to use it as a pin-up. It appeared on the interior pages which were about 20 pages from the end of the comic book, while the center would have been about 30 pages from both the beginning and ending pages. But who really cares? It has always appeared to me to be a centerfold, and, since that momentous day when JLA No. 76 was released, it has always been my favorite of all centerfolds in the history of comics (followed, I suppose, by the great Curt Swan/George Klein centerfold showing the entire Superman family from a 1960s Superman Annual).

I'm with you -- one of my favourite Murphy Anderson pieces, and I wanted it from the day the comic came out as well, but couldn't afford the fare!

Every time I visit your gallery, and I've visited it quite a few times, I always look at this for it never fails to leave a smile. I especially love the body language of all the members (especially Johnny Thunder and Mr. Terrific). This might well be my favorite art on the whole CAF site.

I actually first saw this in JLA #110, which was my first DC Comic- so I've always loved this piece as well. I saw it in person in SD about 15 years ago, bt it was out of my reach. I honesly did not know if was first printed in #76! Congrats.

This is Murphy Anderson in top form.   Love the mic of the new Batman look with the old symbol.   JSA has always been a favorite of mine and this is a perfect portrait of the team.   I wish DC would release this as a print.  Congrats on getting this astounding piece of art.

An absolute iconic JSA image by a multi-generational master.  It would be hard to imagine a better JSA  pinup (or depiction of any kind for that matter).  I think for Bronze age fans when we think of the JSA this is exactly what comes to mind.  Certainly worthy of being the highlight of any OA collection.  Murphy Anderson is SOOOO good!  Congrats!
