DescriptionOn the day of inker-extraordinaire Joltin' Joe Sinnott's passing, I wish to commemorate his life, art and career with a pencil piece. It was the first day of my first SDCC and I was zipping around the room like an headless chicken. As soon as I got in I met Bill Sienkiewicz and threw him money for a commission, which he drew on the spot, standing, talking to a few fans at the same time. It turned out beautiful. I then headed out towards Artists Alley and saw Joe at his table. Jack Kirby had passed away a year and an half before and their Fantastic Four issues were engraved in my mind very much like those Thor's issues with John Buscema. I got close, introduced myself, got all fanboy for a few minutes and then asked if I could get on his commissions list. Joe didn't remember Hogun the Grim (an all-time fave of mine) and a Silver Surfer bust didn't seem a good use of my money, so I went for Thor and he told me to pass by later in the afternoon. Off I went, throwing money left and right the whole day, and got back to the table a couple hours before closing time, right in time to catch Joe getting started on my Thor. Wow! WOW!!! Seein' him putting down those lines, with his hand as steady as a microsurgeon, was dazzlin'. Nothing was there and, a fraction of a second later, fluid lines would start filling up the paper sheet. It didn't take him much to be done with it: decades of drawing indelible lines were seeping out of those pencil traits, just BAM! BAM!! BAM!!! I thanked him and left, and this unbelievable portrait has been with me since then, a memento of a kind man, a great artist and the best inker any penciller could ask for. Thank you for the rivers of ink, Mr.Sinnott! Social/Sharing |

Oh, man. This art posting is what informed me of his passing. It's a wonderful commission, and a great story. Thank you for sharing both. RIP Mr Sinnott

Wonderful piece! As a young kid, i only knew him as "Jack's Inker" on F4, then i picked up a Reed Richards Commission that he did. Safe to say, i was humbled by my lack of knowing how much of a phenomenal illustrator he truly was.
Thanks for sharing!
