DescriptionNew commission: All-Star Squadron #112, homaging as always the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case Avengers #56, original art by John Buscema.This is something of a holy grail for me - I've had commissions before from people who worked with Roy Thomas (Michael T Gilbert and Lou Manna), but this is the first by an artist who worked on the All-Star Squadron when it was being published --- Rick Hoberg! And IMHO Rick did a phenomenal job on this one. Title: "Fly The Flags at Half-Mast..." Story: The Star-Spangled Kid and Stripesy are doing what they do best - punching Nazis! Pursuing rumours of saboteurs, the patriotic pair break up Bund meetings, track down informers, and generally cause havoc among the homefront fascists --- but they still can't find out where the sabotage might be happening. With Pat Dugan called on to chauffeur the elder Pembertons, Sylvester leaves a note for his crime-fighting partner and sets off in pursuit of another lead, which takes him to the New York waterfront. Spying some shady figures sneaking aboard a ship due to carry Lend-Lease supplies across the Atlantic, he defeats the saboteurs, and defuses the bomb they'd planted. However, as he makes his exit, he's attacked himself - by the leader of the Bundist saboteurs, the super-powered Captain Nazi! Unable to match the super-strength of the villain, the Kid is subjected to a savage beating, leaving him battered and bloody. The arriving Stripesy finds him slipping into unconsciousness, and makes a solemn vow: if the Kid dies, nothing will stop him from taking his revenge on Captain Nazi - even if that means killing him! This is so cool! Awesome you got Hoberg to do it - it looks great! I love the logo and issue info included making it look authentic. Thanks so much for sharing it with us.
